Day Destination Experience
1 Porto Arrival

Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Porto, one of Portugal’s most ancient cities, was born and developed on the northern bank of the Duoro River during the Middle Ages. This afternoon, your guided tour of the historical center of Porto, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, will include the 19th Century Stock Exchange Palace and its breathtaking Arabian Room and the Lello bookshop, an exquisite landmark dating back to the early 1900’s (closed on weekends.)

2 Porto

After breakfast, you will be taken on a full day guided tour of the Douro Valley and visit one of the famous wine estates followed by a wine-tasting lecture. Later on in the afternoon, you will have a private tour aboard a Rabelo boat with a local guide. Snacks and wine will be provided. (B)

3 Porto

Today you will have a full day of leisure to enjoy this lovely city or take one of our optional tours listed on page 62.

4 Porto / Lisbon

Have a leisurely morning and early afternoon. You will then be transferred to the Campanhã Railway Station, from which you will embark on the Alfa train to Lisbon. Upon arrival at Santa Apolónia Railway Station in Lisbon, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The springtime temperatures throughout the winter season and the Atlantic breeze in the summer months make this a very inviting city to visit all year round. (B)

5 Lisbon

Lisbon, one of the oldest cities in Europe, is over 2000 years old. Conquered by the Moors in 711 AD, it was recaptured by the Crusaders, becoming the Capital of Portugal in 1147. Your tour of the city will include: the 16th century Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery, exemplifying the Manueline style, the National Coach Museum, where an exceptional collection of the Portuguese Royal Family’s “fairy tale carriages” dating back to the 17th and late 19th century, are displayed. This afternoon, we continue the tour to the Alfama District, St George Castle and a private visit to the Tile Museum (unavailable on Mondays.) (B)

6 Lisbon / Sintra / Cascias / Estoril / Lisbon

Today, you will visit the quaint and aristocratic town of Sintra, recognized as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Visit the magnificent Pena Palace and the breathtaking Quinta da Regaleira Palace. Continue to Cascais, where you will have time to savor some of Portugal’s cuisine at a seaside restaurant. In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxing walking tour of the center of this lovely city. Return to Lisbon along the winding and colorful Estoril coastline. (B)

7 Depart Lisbon (or Extend your Stay)

Today, it is time to say “adeus” to Portugal. Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the USA, or to your next exploration of the Iberian Peninsula. (B)
