2 Reykjavik

Morning meet your guide for city sightseeing tour of Reykjavik, visiting the old town center, the harbor and “The Pearl”. Travel to the Reykjanes Peninsula, a geothermal field with hot springs, steaming vents and mud pots followed by a visit to the famous Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa set in the middle of a lava field. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel in Reykjavík. (B, D)

3 Reykjavik - Selfoss

Drive to Thingvellir National Park, the ancient site of the original Icelandic parliament. Walk down the rift valley caused by the separating North-America and Eurasian tectonic plates, then head to the famous Geysir hot spring area and view one of the most active geysers here, Strokkur, spouting hot water up to 30 meters. Continue to Gullfoss, the ‘Golden Falls’, one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe. Visit a horse breeding farm and learn about the unique, special qualities of the Icelandic horse. Overnight in Selfoss. (B, D)

4 Selfoss

Travel to the valley of the Saga Age farms, Thjorsardalur, an area greatly affected by the 1104 eruption of Iceland´s most famous volcano, Mt. Hekla. Stop at the beautifully reconstructed farmhouse of Thjodveldisbaerinn, the original farm having been buried by ash from the eruption. Travel through this valley, with its extensive birch woods, to the dramatic scenery and untouched wilderness of the highlands. Arrive in Landmannalaugar, an area featuring an amazing range of colors with a landscape of multi-shaded rhyolite. Optional – relax in a natural warm pool. Overnight in Selfoss. (B,L,D)

5 Selfoss - Ilulissat

6 Ilulissat

Very few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi glacier, which thrusts out on a fjord north of Ilulissat. Sail to the very edge of the glacier’s frontline, rising 80-90 meters above the surface of the ocean. Enjoy lunch on the boat as big chunks of heavy ice break off the glacier and tumble into the water. Collisions are enormous and the sight of icebergs shattering, not to mention the sound, is very impressive. (B, Lunchbox)

Hike to the remains of the old settlement, Sermermiut, situated by the ice fjord. Listen to the story about the life and customs of the Greenlanders before European settlers arrived, while enjoying incredible views of the icebergs in the fjord.
