1 Sunday: Madrid

Upon arrival to Madrid you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Remainder of the day at leisure and discover the highlights of this monumental City.

2 Monday: Madrid / Lerma

After breakfast meet your tour escort and travel north through the plateaus of Castille to the Rioja Wine Region. En route, visit some of the picturesque wineries such as ‘Abadia Retuerta’, run by the charismatic New Yorker Donald Cusimano. Enjoy fine wine tasting in a 13th century monastic dining hall of a Romanesque Abbey. The wine tasting will include, the Reserva Selección Especial; winner of best red wine in the world at the London Wine Challenge. Continue to Lerma, via Roa and Aranda de Duero, two of the most important winery villages of the Region. Tonight we stay at the Monastery de la Vide, the Parador of Lerma. (B)

3 Tuesday: Lerma / Burgos / Santo Domingo De La Calzada

After breakfast drive to Burgos, capital of the Castilla and Leon, land of kings and birth city of the famous medieval Spanish hero ‘El Cid’. Visit the Cathedral built in 1221, known to be one of the world’s best examples of Gothic Architecture. Visit the Arch of Santa María and Casa del Cordón, a beautiful palace from the 16th century, before continuing to Santo Domingo de la Calzada. Your Parador, is attached to the Cathedral and is housed in a 12th century hospital, which was used as a shelter for the pilgrims on the Road to Santiago. (B)

4 Wednesday: Rioja Region villages (Haro, Ciezo, Laguardia)

Today, we explore the Rioja Wine Route, visiting the most important villages, such as Haro, El Ciezo & Cenicero. Our visits include wine tasting at some of the region’s best wine cellars. We shall savor the wines of the Ysios Winery whose main building has been designed by Santiago Calatrava the famous Spanish architect. You will have some free time for lunch before returning to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, to visit the village including the famous Torre Exenta and the Cathedral. (B)

5 Thursday: Santo Domingo De La Calzada / LaGuardia / Logroño / Olite

Today we depart toward Olite. En route we shall visit the Wine Culture Museum, located at Dinastía Vivanco Cellars in the old village of Briones. A Sommelier hosted wine tasting will conclude our visit. Continue to LaGuardia, probably the most preserved medieval village in la Rioja. Enjoy some leisure time to explore the ancient streets and enjoy the café experience. Drive to Laguardia a fine example of a 13th Century walled village before continuing to Logroño, capital of La Rioja Region. Tonight, we stay at the Parador in Olite, partially set into the 15th Century Old Palace and considered a National Heritage Monument. (B)

6 Friday: Olite / Cariñena / Sigüenza

After breakfast, a morning tour of the quaint village of Olite and the French-Gothic Castle-Palace, home of the Kings of Navarra. Stroll along the narrow streets with their manor stone houses displaying the Coat of Arms by the wooden doors, the medieval galleries and the well-preserved Roman walls. Continue to Cariñena, an important village which gave its name to the Cariñena Wine. Enjoy a visit and wine tasting at the Cellars Señorío de Ayles. This afternoon, drive to our hotel, the gorgeous Parador Sigüenza, once a 12th century Castle. (B)

7 Saturday: Sigüenza / Alcalá de Henares / Madrid

This morning, after breakfast visit the Medieval village of Sigüenza, with its prehistoric remains dating back to the Roman and Visigoth period. En route to Madrid we stop at the fascinating village of Alcalá de Henares, rich in its historical and artistic heritage. The University of Alcalá, founded in 1499, is the best preserved Renaissance university complex in Europe, marking the beginning of a new cultural and social era in Spain. Continue to the House of Hippolytus (a Roman villa), the old Jewish Quarter and the Museum of Casa Natal, birthplace of Cervantes, author of “Don Quixote”. Continue to Madrid for overnight. (B

8 Sunday: Depart Madrid

After breakfast, it is time to say “adios” to Spain and your fellow travelers. You will be transferred to the Madrid Airport for your return flight to USA. (B)
